To honor veterinary technicians, technologists and support teams, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) has designated October 18–24 as Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week. This is a great opportunity to talk about the important work vet techs do in animal hospitals and the importance of recognizing their contributions.
Veterinary technicians serve in critical roles at PetSmart Veterinary Services hospitals, performing a wide variety of tasks from obtaining medical histories and collecting specimens to providing emergency first aid and preparing pets for surgery. Their work involves specialized knowledge and highly-developed technical abilities, but also compassion and customer service skills. They work all sides of the hospital, collaborating with their teams, caring for pets and interacting with clients on a daily basis.
A VT position is a great choice for aspiring veterinary professionals who want to enter the field and begin working with animals more immediately, without the lengthy education requirements to become a veterinarian. But while the initial schooling requirements are lower, many VTs pursue continuing education and specializations beyond the required Associate’s degree. For some, a VT role is a stepping stone to earning their DVM in the future; for others, it’s a lifelong, fulfilling career on its own, one that never ceases to present new opportunities to learn and grow.
At PVS, our goal has always been to keep medicine in the hands of independent veterinarians. We believe this is what gives pets the best quality care and pet parents the best possible service. But we also believe this is how to build the strongest veterinary teams, with workplace cultures that empower every employee to bring their best, find success in their roles and continually elevate their careers through professional development opportunities.
We’re proud to support VTs during Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week — and every week of the year.
